TONE HOLES

DIAMETERS , KEY HEIGHTS & RATIOS


In combination with the key height, tone hole diameters and their relation to the bore width give an indication of the openness of the instrument for a particular tone.

Sizes are given in millimetres. Diameters of tone holes with an accuracy of one–tenth of a millimetre, bore diameters up to a quarter of a millimetre. Bores are practically always out–of–round and their sizes often cannot be determined accurately. The ratio between the tone hole and the bore is the ratio of their cross–sections and is given as a percentage. Keys naturally rise to a lower height at their hinge side than on the opposite side. The key height here specified (Hkey ) is an average value. Remember, these figures are no values to go by, they are values as I found them in individual instruments.  Coloured numbers are an extrapolation. The successive tables:

Measurements on the Sax junior 15907, Selmer modèle 22, the A. the Selmer superaction, the Yanagisawa 800 and the Grassi are by A. van der Lijn, Amsterdam.

The Sax junior 15907 has a lower serial number than the 18173. Nonetheless there are reasons to believe that the latter is the older one of the two, especially because of the size of hole nr 15.

Tone hole nr. 0 is the hole which plays A0 – Bb0. It is (with a rare exception) only found in the baritone.
