more & older FACINGS

Facings have not always been like we know them today. Previously facings were markedly less open. This holds true for both European and American mouthpieces. This also holds true for both classical and jazz music.

The story goes that Coleman Hawkins was the first to ask Otto Link to make him a more open mouthpiece. This probably also contributed to a distinction between mouthpieces for classical and jazz music. Something more about this difference can be found in the History-section.
Here you find facings of mouthpieces up to the early 50s. Measurements are all done by mouthpiece specialist Ralph Morgan. At that time six so called ‘stations’ along the facing were measured. For this a set gauges with 5 fixed values was used: in inches: 0.0015, 0.010, 0.024, 0.034 and 0.050. Besides, as a sixth value the tip opening was given. The length of the facing was assumed to be equal to the value obtained with the thinnest gauge (about 0.04 millimetre). In practice, the length of the facing will be a tad longer. From the rather extensive documentation of Ralph Morgan I here give an extract. All values were converted into millimetres.
